Spoken: This week students played snake & ladder ( सांप और सीढ़ी ) game and learned to make Hindi sentences to move up the chain or be stuck at the same place. They did well and had lot of fun. The game is available here.

Our class was chosen for demonstrating a "spoken hindi training sesssion" for new volunteers. Instead of culture, the children practiced conversations in Hindi with each other.

Hindi Introduced two new consonants श, ष and reviewed the following consonants य र ल व . The children practiced forming simple words with consonants and vowels learned so far. 6)ब भ Pl review all the consonants and word formation with them. Assignment: - Pg 53 to 56. Most children did complete pg 57 and 58 in the class. However if your child hasn't, please ensure she/ he completes it .

We did a review of what we learnt in the past few classes
1) Time (Samay/Vakt)
2) Present Continuous form of verb- For eg: Aapko Kya Chaihiye? Aapko Kya Karna Hai?
3) Ke Saath (With)
4) Ke Paas (Beside)
5) Ke Pass (Possessive Form - Has).
We formed two teams and asked each team to translate some complex sentences from English to Hindi. The sentences we used are in the attached document (time- related sentences). The children had a lot of fun competing as teams. Also flash cards for time -related words were given out. Please have your child cut them and put in Ziploc and use for practice.
Assignment
A printed copy of the attached homework lesson 18 “Telling Time” was given out. Also the corrected homework from the previous classes was handed out. Please do make it a point to review your child's corrected homework and the scores. This way you will be able to track your child's strengths and weaknesses.
Also use the attached “Time related sentences.docx” to help your child practice at home.
Culture:
We watched a you tube video on "The Birth of Krishna". It may be a good idea to ask them about Mathura, Vrindavan, King Ugrasen, King Kansa, Devaki and Vasudeva. It will help them retain the story and the characters that they watched.

Hindi
We read a story "Ulta Pulta Jungle" and the children loved it. You may want to ask your child to narrate the story in Hindi over dinner. This activity will help them gain a star if logged in the reading and conversational sheet. Test -Overall the children performed well. However they still need to practise the consonant and vowel combination. Also combining consonants ( without matras ) needs to be further worked on. For example "man" ( as in mind) is a combination of m+n
Assignment: Please review letters from ya to ww.
Spoken:
We learnt about Time (Samay/Vakt) - Subah/Dopahar/Shaam/Raat. We also learnt how to tell time in Hindi by reading a clock. We also learnt use of “Sava, Sade, Paune” in telling time. Here is the lesson we used. Please have your child practice telling time in Hindi asking them “Kitne Baje Hai?” at different times during the day.
Assignment: Printed copy of attached Homework Lesson 18 “Review” was given out. Please have your child write the sentences in Hinglish on the homework sheet.
Culture:
We took advantage of the sunny Sunday to play outside and familiarize ourselves with Indian games. Based on popular vote, the class decided to do a small play Akbar Birbal for the annual day. I have identified the play but I need parent volunteers to come forth and help me translate the play into Hindi. Besides the play, the children are going to represent the state they belong to and they are going to speak a couple of sentences in Hindi on any artifact or any thing of interest you may have at home that belongs to your state.
All this can be put together only if we have the support and help from you all. So pl. come forward and help us make this event a success.

Hindi Today, we learnt the letters "L" & "V" "W", and the different sounds they make when associated with different vowels. We also discussed some examples. Since Neelima was unable to take the class, Richa ( Saksham's Mom) substituted. Thanks Richa! Assignment: Page 45-49.
Spoken: We learnt infinite forms of verb (khel = khelna) and their use in “I want <thing>” (aapko kya chaahiye?) and “I want to <do verb>” (aapko kya karnaa hai?). We also revised use of Mujhe/Isko/Ukso/Aapko/Inko/Unko (single) and Humko/Inko (collective).
Assignment: Complete Lesson 17.( attached file)
Culture : We learnt about the varied foods of India - the spices, lentils and some root vegetables. The children identified these on a worksheet they brought home. You may like to give your child a guided tour of your pantry or better still have a "spice hunt!"

Spoken: We played the Bingo game in small groups to practice park vocabulary, verbs and their continuous forms based on what we learnt in the last 3 lessons.

Culture: We learnt more about the festival of Holi-" why"and "how" Holi is celebrated was discussed. The children did a fun craft project by coloring their "Aprons".

Culture: We learnt about invaders and how invasions influenced Indian culture. Keeping up with the theme, the children were shown three You Tube videos - TajMahal, Qutab Minar and Humayun's tomb. The intention was to familiarize children with the Turks and the Mughals contribution to Indian culture.

Spoken Hindi;
- We learnt new vocabulary about breakfast food items, verbs and utensils using the powerpoint presentation.
- We practices making sentences using this new vocabulary in small groups.
- Flash cards were given out. Please have your child cut them and put in a separate Ziploc bag.
Assignment:
Please print a copy of this breakfast items homework as we couldn’t hand out printed copies in class. Have your child write the 8 sentences speech on the back side of this homework.

Last sunday children learnt 'T' and 'TDH' consonent. We revised seasons ,taste, Indian flag etc from level 1 for the exam preparation.
Next week the students revise fruits and vegetable.

Hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving weekend.
Hindi The last class focused on discussing answers of the surprise test. We revised all consonants (studied so far) and vowels.
Culture The children watched a You tube video on Tenali Ram and then moved on to complete the lesson on Aryans. As part of the craft project, the children had fun making a crown and glittering it with gems.
Spoken - We played a board game that allowed us to practice speaking Hindi sentences using words we have learnt so far. - After the game, kids played Dumb Charades. The teachers acted and the children guessed the actions by replying in Hindi. .
Since Apurva is traveling, the next three spoken Hindi classes will be taken by the parent volunteer Richa . Thanks Richa for helping out!
Note from Malini ( Lead Parent Volunteer) “We have no one signed up for 12/18. Also I attended a Lead Parent Volunteering meeting, and all parent volunteer hours are being tracked. They have to volunteer 20 hours for each child.”

Hindi The students were given a test as part of the review of the consonants learnt so far. After the test, they were shown a You Tube story of Akbar and Birbal that they thoroughly enjoyed.
Culture We continued our learning about Aryans. The students discussed and wrote down answers to a set of questions handed to them in class. They also completed the Ganesha craft in class.
Spoken - We used a presentation to learn about the various morning routine verbs and nouns for getting up and getting ready. Also learnt the right forms of the verb in various contexts (male, female, collective-we, elder, same age or younger).

Pl note that the mid-term exam is fast approaching and it will be conducted in early January. The exam will be based on the curriculum that has been covered in the class. Please plan to use some time during the December winter break to revise that with your child.

Hindi This Sunday we completed more consonants- 'Ch', 'Chh, 'j, 'jh'. We learnt some new words from these consonants and also formed sentences with these word. The class also translated sentences from Hindi to English and vice a versa. We also had fun singing Hindi songs.
Culture We studied the Aryan civilisation and Vedic Culture. The class touched upon various aspects including the migration of the Aryans, their society and the Vedas. We will continue the same in the next class too.
Spoken - Kids presented their Hindi speech in front of the class and answered follow- up questions. - We played a fun game of making funny English sentences with two words provided to them and then translating it to Hindi.

Hindi class The students learnt the consonant 'gh' . The story "Gussevali Chachi" was read aloud. Based on the story, the students had an interactive question answer session. Assignment Pl. Ensure that the child completes page number 17 and 19.
Culture class: The children were taken for a Yoga demonstration.
Spoken Hindi - We reviewed what we had learnt so far. We did this in small groups using flash cards. - We also played a game of charades with children guessing the actions. Assignment - Spoken: Printed sheet of "Hindi Conversations" was handed out for memorization at home. The kids will need to recite in front of the class on 11/6. Also please revise the vocabulary on the second page.

Hope you all are planning to attend the Diwali celebrations on Oct 29th. For more details refer to the Gurukul website.
Hindi We revised the consonant “KH” before moving to the next consonant 'g'. Assignment Practice writing the consonant 'g'. Also write some sentences using the 'g' consonant.
Culture We talked in class about Diwali. In addition to discussing with students the various activities associated with Diwali ( and I must admit I got an excellent responseJ), the class focused on the religious significance of Diwali in the various parts of the country. The children also learnt the root word for “Diwali” and its meaning.
Craft - The students enjoyed decorating diyas with sparkles and color paper.
Spoken Hindi - We learnt several verbs and how to use them with male and female nouns. - Each student presented their speech to the class. It was great to see each and every student speak 5 complete sentences about their family in Hindi!! Assignment - Spoken: Printed sheet of “Hindi Verbs” topic needs to be completed.

Hindi Class The class commenced with the revision of the consonant 'K'. We practiced by making opposite words and sentences. Since the class responses to the revision was good, we moved one step ahead and learnt the letter “KH”. Assignment Pl. remind your child to complete page number 15- writing the consonant 'KH'.
Culture Class
-The class learnt more about the Indus Valley Civilization -but this time with a read aloud story “ A day in the life of a Beadmaker”. The various features of the civilization such as the grid planning of the city and its division into upper &lower town, the granaries, trade ( beads and seals), pottery, jewelry and the script were all woven into the story. To help them visualize better, pictures of the same were also shown. -Since last week was a week of festivities, the class was shown a small You tube video of the story behind Navratri. - We revised the vocabulary learnt so far. - We also learnt prepositions for Up, Down, Front, Back, Inside, Outside. - We played a translation game forming 2 teams to convert sentences between Hindi and English. - We also played a "snakes and ladders" style game to practice our speaking skills, which the kids enjoyed.

We had fun with Vowels in Hindi and we learn 1 consonant. Kids have learnt enough that they can now ask questions to me. :)
Assignment - I have given them homework- writing at least three words for each vowel at least first word in Hindhi. (except the last 2 vowels)
Culture Class Review
Today we took a journey into our past. We learnt of our ancient civilization the Indus Valley Civilization. The children were introduced to new words "history" "archaeologist" "A.D" "B.C" and "civilization". Through both -YouTube video as well as some books they got a feel of what the civilization was about. We are planning to continue the same topic in the next class too. Assignment:
-Following the discussion in class on the above subject, the children have been handed an assignment to complete for next class. As I mentioned earlier the answers may be written in bullet points. PL. encourage the child to write his/ her name in Hindi on the assignment. We will reinforce the encouragement in school too:)
- Due to lack of time we were unable to complete the craft project- " rakhi making" . It's a simple glue job and we would appreciate if the child is able to take some time out of his week schedule to complete the project.
Spoken Class - Concepts of Yeh, Veh, Haa.n, Nahii.n and their use in full sentences. - Flash cards were also given out to be used at home and school. Please cut these and put in a Ziploc bag.

Children have received their individual folders that covers the entire Hindi class Curriculum and they are doing a great job of revising the vowels and taking baby steps towards the first consonant "K". Assignment- your child should complete Page 14 of the folder.- “K”.
Culture Class The class took a break from the Indus Valley Civilization to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti. A You tube video encapsulating the life of the Mahatma was watched by the students. It was followed by an interactive quiz session where the kids were familiarized with important facts relating to Gandhiji. Assignment The quiz paper brought home by the child needs to be revised so that the child is well acquainted with important facts.
Spoken Class- - We learnt vocabulary for various objects around the classroom. - Covered simple respectful commands that will be used throughout the year in the classroom. Assignment- - Spoken: Printed sheet of “Classroom commands” topic was handed out to be done at home
