Class Update - 10/02/2011
Namaste parents,

Hindi:

We revised all the vowels today in class. We made the class interactive and asked the kids to come up with words beginning with each of the vowels and the kids did an excellent job of coming up with the words. We did the क series of the consonants. Although we started with क last week, we finished the consonants from क... ङ this week. We will be moving faster now to ensure we at least give a once over for all the consonants. I have not been giving homework but please do spend time with your children to revise the vowels and the consonants from क... ङ.

Spoken:

In today's lesson we reviewed our last week's 4 words : HAA.N---Yes, NAHII.N---No, YAH---This , VAH--That and used them in multiple sentences .We also looked at flashcards to get more practice. The children were introduced to 3 new words this wk:

KAHAN--Where
YAHAN--Here
VAHAN--There.

I have sent home 2 sheets, one is for flashcards which has to be cut out and practiced at home and the other is match the commands that go with the objects.(this is to be brought back to school on sunday.) It would also help the children if you could incorporate these words in your daily sentences for better practice.

Culture:

We learnt about Gandhiji, how he fought for the freedom of the Indian people. We also talked about Gandhiji's way of fighting battles - peaceful and non-violent. We talked about his

Some reminders:

Please ensure the following:

Send a jacket with your kids. The weather is changing and the kids are complaining about feeling cold and end up disturbing the class
Make sure your kid's homework is in the folder
Take a few minutes to complete the log in your kid's folder
Ensure your kid's folder has their name to avoid mixup of folders
Ensure the snack is a dry snack and only water is sent as a drink. Do not send any juices, milk or other drinks.
Finally, please ensure your kids bring crayons, pencils, glue and a notebook to practice the hindi script.

Class Update - 9/18/2011
नमस्ते Parents;
Welcome to the Gurukul Community!!!
Review of the First Session:
We had a good day in class. After the parents left, we began the class with the "Om" chanting followed by "Tumhi Ho Maata" prayer.
We had an icebreaker session where kids talked to their neighbor and then told everyone their name and how old they were in Hindi.
We talked to the children about their summer vacation and who had gone to India and which part of India they had traveled to.
On the culture front, we talked about Ganesh Chaturthi and we told stories about the festival. Keanu told us the story of how Lord Ganesha was born.
The detailed breakup of the spoken Hindi is listed below from Shilpa-ji
Finished with National Anthem
Coming Week: I have to apologize for missing the upcoming class but I will be traveling to Luxembourg on business. However, we have 2 very capable teachers covering for me. When I had volunteered to teach several months ago, I had not anticipated the level of travel I will be undertaking over the next couple of months. We will ensure that your children's journey is not impacted by my travels. Frankly, they may be thrilled that I am not around to bug them.

Hindi homework for this week will be for kids to write 3 words with each of the consonants above.

Class Update - 10/23/2011
I am very sorry for the delayed email. I have been sick for the last week and am just getting back on my feet. We had a great class the last time around and the kids liked their teacher and what she taught. We had the benefit of Ms. Ragini who has taught at Gurukul for several years and she came to our class to observe and help us teach. She told the kids about the उल्टा पुल्टा जंगल. The kids thoroughly enjoyed her all Hindi delivery of the story and were great at picking up and learning things.

In the Hindi class, we continued to practice our vowels and the consonants. We have not yet moved too far in the consonants as the Kids are still working through their vowels. The kids are able to say and understand different words with each of the consonants from क.....घ. We will start moving to the च series this week.

In Spoken Hindi class, we started learning the present tense forms of verbs. Kids need to be able to take the root form of a verb and convert it to a present tense sentence beginning with I, He, or She. Please practice this with your kids at home. It is a very important skill which will be used throughout the rest of the year. For example,
Root form I _____. He ______. She ______.
baiTHnaa
to sit Mai.n baiTHtaa/ii huu.n.
I sit. Vah baiTHtaa hai.
He sits. Vah baiTHtii hai.
She sits.
tairnaa
to swim Mai.n tairtaa/ii huu.n.
I swim. Vah tairtaa hai.
He swims. Vah tairtii hai.
She swims.
likhnaa
to write Mai.n likhtaa/ii huu.n.
I write. Vah likhtaa hai.
He writes. Vah likhtii hai.
She writes.
bhaagnaa
to run Mai.n bhaagtaa/ii huu.n.
I run. Vah bhaagtaa hai.
He runs. Vah bhaagtii hai.
She runs.

Homework --

The homework for this week is due on Nov-6th.  Kids are supposed to memorize one of the speeches to deliver in class. If the speech is too long for them, feel free to cut it short so that it is only 5 sentences long.I have sent the sheet home, incase your child was absent here's the link--
https://skydrive.live.com/view.aspx?cid=55607894C85E7326&resid=55607894C85E7326%211021
The idea behind this homework is to review all of the different kinds of phrases the kids should have learned so far, and put them together into a conversation.

On the culture front, we spoke about the Dusshera and Diwali festivals and the party and we made the dandiya sticks, which i hope the kids put to good use at the party.

Hope you guys have a good week and I hope to see you all this weekend. Cheers!!!

Class Update - 10/9/2011
Namaste Parents!!!

Today in class, we started with consonants but realized that the kids have forgotten their vowels. So we started off with the vowels and did a revision of the vowels. We also revised the consonants of the क series.

The kids have said that they do not remember the vowels. So I will be formally providing homework from this week.

We learnt words for each of the vowels and for the क series of consonants.

We learnt the words आ = Aam, ऊ = Oonth, क = Kalam & Kamal, ख = Kharghosh, ग = Gamla, घ = Ghoda & Ghar.

This week’s homework will be to print and write all the vowels 5 times.

After having your kids do this work, please provide me feedback on how long this takes so I can figure out how much homework to give the kids.

It is very important that the parents spend some time practicing the vowels with their kids.

Lesson for spoken Hindi

Lesson 4 in spoken Hindi on Sunday was a revision of the last 3 lessons and we played two games based on the lesson,to see how much the kids remembered and how much of the phrases they could use. They did well and showed good team spirit. Each team that answered was awarded10 points and finally all the children got stickers.
