We introduced a new grammar construct in this week’s class. • Infinitive with the VERB - KHA (खा) : Verb (eat) ; Khana (खाना) = Kha + na (ना) = To eat - Naach (नाच): Dance; Naachna (नाचना) = naach + na = To dance.
• Want : Chaahiye (चाहिए) (in this form means need) - Aapko kya chaahiye (आपको क्या चाहिए)? (What do you need? ) - Mujhe/Usko/Aapko/Inko / Unko (मुझे / उसको आपको / इनको /उनको <noun> चाहिए >>Add Nouns : Pencil, seb, kitaab….
• Want to <do>: o Aapko kya karna hai? आपको क्या कऱना है? o Aapko kya chaahiye ? आपको क्या चाहिए? o Mujhe khaana hai मुझे खाना है
We posed questions to kids like: Aapko kya chaahiye? (आपको क्या चाहिए) and encouraged use of any word learnt at Gurukul over previous lessons like Mujhe kela chaahiye मुझे केला चाहिए, Mujhe kitaab chaahiye मुझे किताब चाहिए etc.
Due to limited time in class, we could not cover use of WANT TO in sentences and request parents to teach the kids at home. The teaching method includes: Q) Aapko kya karna hai आपको क्या कऱना है? A) Mujhe khaana hai मुझे खाना है or Mujhe khaana hai मुझे खाना है
Mujhe मुझे <> hai है ….. let your child plug in the infinitive + verb e.g. Mujhe Khelna hai मुझे खेलना है or Mujhe school jaana hai मुझे स्कूल जाना है.
Please encourage new vocabulary usage and use of different infinitives. Subjects covered in previous classes include morning routine – bath, brushing, getting ready, Breakfast and lunch, going to the park, going to activities etc.
Culture We talked about Foods of India. We discussed what the kids liked in Indian Cuisine and tried to map it to a region in India. We saw that food varies a lot by region in India. In North India the food uses flat breads like chapati and naan. In South India the food is primarily based on rice. In the coastal areas fish dishes are popular.
We went through different spices, lentils and beans that are commonly used in Indian Cuisine.

The kids played CrissCross Bingo- a build-up review game that involved using all the words and phrases learnt to date in class. Kids pulled clues from the deck and tried to come up with complete sentences. Students tried to use possessive nouns (such as तेरा, मेरा, उसकी etc), verbs, present tense, present continuous tense , etc. while making the sentences.
Culture
We went over the Indian festival of colors: Holi. We learnt that Holi is celebrated around February/March of every year. It celebrates the victory of good over evil and also bridges the social gap as everybody plays with each other on this day. We went over the story of King Hiranyakshyap (who wanted everybody to worship him) and his son Prahalad (who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu). Hiranyakshyap asked his sister Holika to take Prahalad and sit on fire (she had a boon that fire would not harm her). She dies in the fire and Prahalad came out unscathed due to his devotion to Lord Vishnu. So a day before Holi, traditionally, people burn a mock of Holika on the streets.
Next day, is day of Holi celebrations. The tradition of playing colors is particularly rampant in north India. People take extreme delight in spraying color water on each other with pichkaris or throwing color balloons, pouring buckets and buckets of it.
In Mathura and Vrindavan people also play holi with flower petals.
Singing Bollywood Holi numbers and dancing on the beat of dholak is also a part of the tradition.
Holi also has a lot of mouth watering specialties like gujiya, malpuas, mathri, puran poli, dahi badas etc and downed with glasses full of thandai.

The mid-year testing in our class went smoothly, students finished their written exam within the allotted time. The kids took written Hindi, culture and oral spoken Hindi tests. Teachers and parent volunteers assisted the kids in understanding the questions
The written Hindi test had 30 questions - matching , true or false (yes/No), circle the correct option kind of questions. There were 5 questions on Culture. The spoken Hindi test was an oral and kids were shown two conversational videos in Hindi which were shared with parents earlier and the questions were based on those videos. Parents will get their child's answer sheets on Parent-teacher conference day.

Videos are available at https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=377C7D095D0210EA&id=377C7D095D0210EA%21171. Videos # 2 and #3 will be used in our mid-term evaluation.

Culture We covered Indian rivers, states and cities of India. The kids highlighted some major rivers like Ganges, Brahmaputra, Narmada etc. on the map of India | | | | | | | Hindi This week we held a mini- quiz that covered all the topics covered to date- no new topics were covered. Topics covered to date are: Family .....................pg # 10 Parts of the Body.........pg # 13 Colors........................pg # 17 Counting.....................pg # 19 Domestic Animals........pg #23 Wild Animals...............pg # 24
Sanjitha B was our Vishesh Vidyarthi for the week. For the parents of children who missed this week’s class, please revise the material taught to date at home.
Spoken Hindi This week we revised Possessive nouns. The topic is slightly difficult to teach and the teachers and Hindi Committee are attempting to create some basic rules and introduce more material and examples for reference. Unfortunately there are no rules for the exceptions and the key thing for kids to understand the concepts is through repeated practice especially usage in conversation - the more they use it in conversation, the more it will become natural for them.
There was no homework this week. We request all parents to practice Hindi at home with the kids. The teachers will be administering random tests or quizzes in class and we hope they can do well in them. Each year, Gurukul administers a mid-session evaluation test in January and if your child performs well, teachers can recommend students be moved up a level. Culture We covered Christmas and its celebration in India- Christmas has some unique Indian flavor and you can read more about it on the presentation available at our class website
The teachers of 1E would like to wish all students and their families a very happy and safe Holiday Season. We hope you have a great 2012 and look forward to meeting your kids again next year.

Spoken Hindi
This week we covered possessive pronouns and relationships using various objects that the students have already been taught in earlier classes. Word like Mera/Meri, Iska/Iski, Uska/Uski, Unka/Unki, Kiska/Kiski were taught with examples.
Some useful tips that parents should help reinforce with kids at home: 1. The possessive pronouns do not correspond to the GENDER of the SUBJECT, they correspond to the GENDER of the NOUN OBJECT being referenced. E.g : Radha’s bag is राधा का बस्ता not राधा की बस्ता | so the use of “kaa” vs “ki” depends upon the object “bag” being talked about and not that the subject is masculine or feminine. Therefore it is important to teach the kids about that rule of grammar and the fact that the objects have genders unlike the English language.
2. A LOT OF Hindi words ending in the “aa” and “a” sound go with the ‘aa’ sound ending possessive. E.g : इसका जूता , इसका बस्ता, मेरा पैन, आपका घर
3. A LOT OF Hindi words ending in the “ee” sound go with the ‘ee’ sound ending possessive. E.g : इसकी बिल्ली , इसकी कुर्सी, मेरी घड़ी, आपकी नानी
4. However there are many anomalies like : मेरा भाई , आपकी मेज़, बड़ा हाथी, घर की दीवार and so on.
We will be covering more examples of possessive nouns next week as well
Culture Shrinath Acharya ji presented a fabulous tabla demo this week. He was accompanied by his students Anish, Saketh, Amogh & friends Ravi & Nishanth. He provided valuable insight into the various gharanas and the difference in their playing styles- it is a great learning experience for all!

The children have been introduced to vocabulary in the following categories: Greetings, Family members, Yes/No, Yeh/Veh, yahan/vahan/kahan, Body parts, Basic classroom commands and classroom and backpack contents. It was no surprise to see their competitive juices flowing and all the kids participated actively in the game. We also practiced the following prepositions: Ke oopar Ke Neeche Ke aage Ke peeche Ke andar Ke bahar The spoken Hindi homework for beginners requires preparing a 3-5 line speech about the kids and their families. Culture :
We had our first culture class on Sunday. The kids learnt how India got its name. They also learnt about the alternate name for India - Bharat. The following below are more names by which India is/was known:
India: came from Greek "indoi" which means people lived near "Indus River".
Bharat or Bharatvarsh: named after great king of India.
Hind or Hindustan: "Land of River Sindhu (Indus).
Jammu dweep: Mentioned in Puranas.
Yin du: Chinese word for India.
Aryavart: Name for Northern India in classical Sanskrit literature.
The kids learnt the meaning of the word "Gurukul" and "Gurudakshina". We went over the story of "Ekalavya", which gave them a glimpse of ancient India's Gurukul and Gurudakshina system.
Finally we did an art work in class. Last Sunday, we could not finish the art work as we were short on scissors and glue. Hopefully, kids will get the above next time and we will be able to finish the art work on time.
Looking forward to the next class.
