In culture, We had a demo in the commons area. The topic was Jhansi ki Rani Laxmibai. Kids were shown a slide show on the life of Rani Laxmibai. She was the queen of the Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi, situated in the northern part of India. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and a symbol of resistance to the rule of the British East India Company in the subcontinent. Later the students of Youth board presented a famous Hindi poem of Jhansi ki Rani written by well-known poetess Subhadra Kumari Chouhan.

Here are Taste स्वाद details in English and Hindi
Sweet मीठा
Sour खट्टा

Spoken Hindi:
We started introducing new grammar construct for students- the Present Continuous form of a sentence. Until now they learnt “Neil khelta hai, Radha khaati hai..”. We introduced  “Neil khel raha hai..” “Radha kha rahi hai…” concepts. This lesson will be continued in the next class as we were unable to cover some of the material planned due to time constraints.
The lesson is available at the following location: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=55607894C85E7326&id=55607894C85E7326%21927#cid=55607894C85E7326&id=55607894C85E7326%211061

Students also presented their prepared speeches on breakfast related conversation to our parent volunteers.

In homework this week, students need to memorize a conversation from the two options provided- we will pair them up in the next class and they will conduct the conversation in Hindi

Culture:
In culture, children learned about various Musical Instruments of India. They also had fun creating a picture chart of Indian Musical Instruments by cutting and pasting the pictures of various instruments on a construction sheet and matching each picture with its name.

For Culture Home Work, children should complete their Musical Picture Chart (if they didn't complete it in class) and bring it to the next class.

Spoken Hindi
This week we revised Possessive nouns. The topic is slightly difficult to teach and the teachers and Hindi Committee are attempting to create some basic rules and introduce more material and examples for reference. Unfortunately there are no rules for the exceptions and the key thing for kids to understand the concepts is through repeated practice especially usage in conversation - the more they use it in conversation, the more it will become natural for them.
The Hindi Committee has created a chart with nouns that follow the gender rule and nouns that are exceptions. The feminine nouns are in pink and the masculine nouns are in blue so that kids can just look at the color and use it correctly in a sentence. The chart is at

Spoken Hindi
This week we covered possessive pronouns and relationships using various objects that the students have already been taught in earlier classes. Word like Mera/Meri, Iska/Iski, Uska/Uski, Unka/Unki, Kiska/Kiski were taught with examples.

Some useful tips that parents should help reinforce with kids at home:
1. The possessive pronouns do not correspond to the GENDER of the SUBJECT, they correspond to the GENDER of the NOUN OBJECT being referenced.
E.g : Radha’s bag is राधा का बस्ता not राधा की बस्ता | so the use of “kaa” vs “ki” depends upon the object “bag” being talked about and not that the subject is masculine or feminine.
Therefore it is important to teach the kids about that rule of grammar and the fact that the objects have genders unlike the English language.

2. A LOT OF Hindi words ending in the “aa” and “a” sound go with the ‘aa’ sound ending possessive. E.g : इसका जूता , इसका बस्ता, मेरा पैन, आपका घर

3. A LOT OF Hindi words ending in the “ee” sound go with the ‘ee’ sound ending possessive. E.g : इसकी बिल्ली , इसकी कुर्सी, मेरी घड़ी, आपकी नानी

4. However there are many anomalies like : मेरा भाई , आपकी मेज़, बड़ा हाथी, घर की दीवार and so on.

We will be covering more examples of possessive nouns next week as well

Gaanaa (To Sing) गाना
Likhnaa (To Write) लिखना
We used verbs in sentences like लड़की गाती है, लड़का खेलता हैं etc.
As there was a lot of content, we will repeat these verbs and their usage in the 10/16 class. Our intent is to make the children understand the verbs and their usage (masculine/feminine) . Our Sharepoint has the lesson plan in Powerpoint which has audio tracks embedded in it (https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=55607894C85E7326&id=55607894C85E7326%21932&sc=documents#cid=55607894C85E7326&id=55607894C85E7326%21989&sc=documents ) .

We also distributed flash cards and homework in the class.

In the next class we will be dividing the children into groups and making them practice and revise the verbs and usage in sentences

  • Spoken Hindi

In the 4th lesson, the children have been introduced to vocabulary in the following categories:
Greetings, Family members, Yes/No, Yeh/Veh, yahan/vahan/kahan, Body parts, Basic classroom commands and classroom and backpack contents. Our objective is now to get the children familiar with the words and how to use them in small sentences

We played a translation game in the class today where the teacher quizzed the children on translation from and to Hindi. It was no surprise to see their competitive juices flowing and all the kids participated actively in the game. The more they practice these words in short sentences,  the easier it will be for us to introduce new words and their usage in complex sentences. We also practiced the following prepositions:

Ke oopar
Ke Neeche
Ke aage
Ke peeche
Ke andar
Ke bahar

The spoken Hindi homework for beginners requires preparing a 3-5 line speech about the kids and their families. We will ask the kids to present them in front of the class so please have them practice at home.  Unfortunately this week, we did not have sufficient printouts so I request the parents to download the homework from our Sharepoint- Beginners Lesson 4 Spoken and Intermediate Lesson 4 Spoken
Flash Cards Lesson 4 Spoken are also available for easy reference

From the next class, we will be conversing more in Hindi- so please ensure your children continue to practice at home. Our star student this week was Pallavi J  who is the youngest student in the class.
