We had a demonstration in Carnatic Music by Chitra Subramaniam. She spoke about the similarities and differences in the Carnatic and Hindustani Music styles and walked us through a very interesting presentation.

We introduced the Hindu calendar system and talked about the difference between Gregorian calendar and Hindu calendar. We learned the names of the months in Indian calendar and figured out our birthday months. We also talked about the video we watched in the previous class "The story of India", e.g. where did our ancestors first walk out from, which state in India was found the sounds of beginning of human talk, in which state was discovered the gene from one of our first ancestors, Harappa civilization, Sanskrit the root of languages etc. | | | | |

The children were given a test on culture topic to find out the areas where they need to work. We quickly realize that childeren weren't comfortable in Indian spices so we reviewed them in the class. Class also spend some time to learn Dandiya for an upcoming Gurukul Diwali event. | | | | |

We saw the video of a DVD series called "Stories of India". This series came on the PBS TV channel and was highly appreciated. It talks about different stages in the history of India. We will continue showing and learning from this series for next 4-6 weeks. | | | | |

| | Reading / Comprehension: We started the class by reviewing matras. Then we started reading Chapter 3 of Hindi Book (Subah Ho Gayi). We divided the class into 2 parts and read from chapter 3 individually with each student. This was an effort to gauge their reading and comprehension skills so we can tailor the class to their level. This was a very useful exercise since we now know the strengths of each kid. Spoken Hindi: During the spoken Hindi session, we divided the class into 3 stations based on skill level. We performed few chain drills / games using mera and meri , aapka and aapki, inka and inki . Please practice sentences with these words with your children at home.
Writing: We played game with the class using hindi sentences and practiced the differences u and uu, j and jha etc.

| | We started the class by reviewing matra and then reading chapter 2 of Hindi Book (Meri Paatshaala). We noticed that few students can read but don't understand the meaning. We are constantly putting efforts to ensure that everyone understands meaning as well.
During the spoken Hindi session, we performed few chain drills and practiced new words like "Main(I) and Tum (You)" as well as "Haa (Yes) and Na (No)".Please practice sentences with these words with your children at home.
In the culture session, we talked about "Women of India". We had a good dialog about some of the powerful Indian women we have had in the past and in today's time like Lakshmi Bai of Jhanshi, Sarojini Naidu, Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi, P.T. Usha, Menaka Gandhi, Sania Mirza etc. We will continue discussion on this topic next week.

| | We started class with brief introduction of all students and teachers. Then we jumped directly to gauge the Hindi Reading skills and started reading and understanding meaning of first chapter in Hindi Book (Sun le Vinati Hey Bhagavan).
During the spoken Hindi session, we performed a chain drill where each child said 'Namaste, mera naam ... hai' to the other. The two main sentences the children heard today are: 1. Mera naam ... hai. 2. Ye ... hai. E.g. Ye maa hain, ye papa hain, ye chair hai, ye table hai. Please practice these sentences with your children at home. We will continue to do more in the spoken Hindi sessions in the subsequent classes.
In the culture session, we had a good dialog on understanding the meaning of culture. We talked about different aspects of Indian Culture and started an excercise to understand what is one thing which each of the student like and dislike about Indian and American cutlure. | | | | |
