Culture Homework: 9/13
The class discussed doing a project starting next week.  Every student needs to pick something about India - either a topic (for example, the Taj Mahal) or a person (for example, Lata Mangeshkar) and present 3-4 minutes on it in culture section of the class.  One student per class.  Mihir has already volunteered to do a topic not this coming Sunday but the Sunday after which is September 27th.

The idea behind this weekly presentation is not only to engage the kids in something cultural about India that they prepare and present but also allow them to hone their presentation skills.  I am lucky to have this class full of very smart and talented kids, I think one of the ways I can challenge and engage them is to have them present to each other.  They all get into it and enjoy it while learning something.

Culture Homework
Homework: next week everyone will need to pick one festival of their liking which happens in the month between September and October and prepare 5 sentences on it to present to class in Hindi.  I would appreciate your help with these parents.  Please help your child prepare 5 sentences in Hindi on the festival of their choice they want to talk about.  For reference on the festivals you can visit http://festivalsofindia.in/ and at the bottom of the page you will find a list of festivals in September and October.

Mihir Upadhyaya has also signed up to present a quick talk on a topic or person of his choice from India (except for Bollywood stars).  We discussed this in the last class, throughout the culture section this year I would like to have each student prepare a quick note on either a famous Indian person or an Indian topic and present to class in Hindi.  The idea is not only for them to learn more about India and its culture, but also practice speaking Hindi and speaking in front of a group.

Culture Homework
Since we had a demo, the culture homework from last week still is the homework for this week.  2-3 students did bring the map of India with information about the three states from last week.  I would like to see everyone do the same - here is the homework from last week for your reference:

This week we started a new ongoing project in the culture section.  Each student got a map of India with present day states shown but not the names.  This week we talked about three states, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.  They are represented by numbers 10, 21 and 24 in the map.  Each student needs to keep that map and bring it every class because we will talk about other states throughout the year.
The first part of the culture homework for this week is to find out the following information about the three states and come prepared to discuss in class:

Name of the state
Its capital city
It's main or primary language

The second part of the homework is for each student to pick one of these states and find out more information on it.  Find something unique that they can write down in Hindi and present in class.  We will do that for the three states next week.
Please help your child with this research, there is a lot of information on the web about these states.  I am sure everyone can find unique things about these states and discuss next week.  It will be fun learning experience
