We also practised saying and writing numbers 35-40 .
In our spoke hindi session we made up a silly story with each kid adding a line to the story using their newly learnt words and sentence patterns.
In culture we learnt about festivals in the month of October.
| | | | | | | This week in our Hindi hour we worked on letters and counting upto 35. In our spoken hindi hour we continued with last weeks exercise of forming sentences using verbs. And also substituting inka, unka, inki, unki for names in the sentences. In our culture hour we watched a demo on Sitar by Pandit. Debi Prasad Chatterjee and his accompanist on the tabla .The kids seemed to enjoy it and had a lot of interesting questions to ask at the end. I'd like to bring to your attention to a challenge that Archana and I are facing during our spoken hindi class. Some of the older boys in class have become quite disruptive and repeated requests to stick to the topic on hand and to focus have so far been ignored. Archana and I request you parents to have a chat with your kid and ask them to take the spoken hindi segment more seriously. We would not like these kids to miss out on a valuable part of their Gurukul experience.Thank you all for your understanding.

This week we reviewed body parts and learnt the correct words to express feelings in hindi.
We also did letters ka kha ga and reviewed numbers till 20.
In our conversation lesson we learnt to use verbs and to form sentences with them, like daudna, khana, padna, sona etc.
Eg:Tanya padti hei,Neel daudta hei.
Please work on adding more verbs in their vocabulary and use these words and more in daily conversing with the children.
In culture we learnt about ancinet kings of India, starting from the Maurya dynasty and continuing to the Southern kingdoms of Pallavas,Pandyas and Cholas. We also worked on a map of India and identified 3 states of India, their capitals and languages spoken in the state.(Jammu and Kashmir,Punjab and Tamil Nadu)
This will be an ongoing exercise. We'll work on more states over the next month or so .Please have the kids save their maps in their folders to use in the classroom.
| | | | | | | This week we reviewed numbers and counted upto 40. We also worked on the vowels some more.We also reviewed days of the week. In spoken Hindi session we worked on sentences with mera and meri, unka, unki and inka , inki. For ex.Yeh mera kurta hei,yeh inki puri hei,voh unka dupatta hei. The point being in the exercise is to learn the striling(feminine) and puling (masculine) forms of nouns.A good thing to note which for me too was new is that nouns with an ending sound of a or aa are usually masculine and will be mera, aapka, unka, inka. For ex. Joota, taala, khilona, ghoda. Similarly, nouns ending in i or ee sound are striling(feminine) and will be used witha meri, aapki, inki and unki. For ex.ladki, puri, chaabi, sari etc. This ought to be a good clue too for some of the non hindi families in the class.I know it certainly helped me. There are some exceptions to that rule but for now we want the kids to start using the right gender in their sentences. In culture we spoke about the Indus valley civilization,Harappa and Mohenjodaro in particular. The children made necklaces and bracelets from pasta and beads for their craft activity.
| | | | | | | On sunday,we reviewed vocabulary from last year,fruits ,vegetables and animals.We also practised writing from a to uu.
During the spoken Hindi session, we had the children learn to ask and reply to the question "Ye kya hei?". The teacher would start by asking a student "Ye kya hai?" and the student replying with "Ye ... hei". The idea here is to get the sentence pattern correctly. And then with that as a start to work on adding more vocabulary by learning the hindi words for the objects. The students also learnt to say the opposite "Ye ...nahin hai, ye ....hei". Yeh laal nahin, yeh neela hei.
We also learnt to say sentences like "Mere papa ka naam... hai, meri mummy ka naa ... hai, mere school ka naam ... hai". Main Isha hoon, mein ladki hoon,Yeh Rahul hei,yeh ladka hei. In culture we learnt about festivals, its meaning to us and then also discussed 4 festivals in this past month, Raksha bandhan,Janmashtmi,Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam.We also discussed about calendars,Roman,Hindu and Islamic calendar and the differences in the 3. The activity for the kids was to color in a kathakali mask and a word scramble. | | | | | | | Namaste parents, Welcome to another exciting year at Gurukul. We got off to a great start yesterday. We reviewed some material from last year.We practised counting in hindi up to 30 and naming the vowels. We also worked on our first conversation class. The kids learnt to point at objects and form sentences like "yeh chair hei", "vah door hei". And in the process learning to substitute hindi words for common objects, like chair, door, book etc. Please continue the same exercise at home so that the children pick up more words and familiarize themselves to using the new words learnt. In our culture session we talked about the meaning of the word Gurukul ,the guru shishya paramapara and Gurudakshina. We listened to the story of Eklavya. We also spoke about the meaning of Culture and its evolution and existence. All in all we had a very good beginnning to our Gurukul school year. For future classes please make sure the kids have a few basic supplies in their Gurukul bags to be used in class. Sharpened Pencils,Erasers, scissors, glue stick, crayons or markers and a notebook. Please do try and be punctual. We will start promptly at 11 .Students will be marked tardy if late. We expect a 70% attendence to promote a child to the next level at Gurukul. Drop of starts at 10:50 AM and pick up at 1:15 PM. Please don't leave kids unattended in class if either Archana or I are running late.
If you plan on carpooling we have authorization notes that need to be signed. We have extra copies in class if you need them.
If a parent is late in picking up, your child will be waiting for you in the office.
Please make sure to send your child to class after a healthy breakfast.
Please send in a small dry snack as we will be eating and working on conversing in hindi .
We have kids with allergies in class so please make sure to send those snacks with no nuts in them.
