Important reminder : We still do not have any parent volunteer to help with the annual function, and if we don't get any response we would not be able to plan any social function afterwards.
We would love to have a potluck in the class after the function ( finger food only) For this, we need one or two parent volunteers to take the responsibility to be the “lead parent volunteer” for the event. These people would need to communicate with the event committee(Gurukul) and other parents of the class to get logistics and other things aligned. Please let us know if you can take this responsibility for the event. Looking forward to your responses.

| | | | | | | Namaste Parents, This week in hindi we learned about wild animals. As you probably know, we performed a short spoken Hindi evaluation for each child in levels 1, 2 & 3. We have sent the spoken Hindi evaluation form along with your child. Please take a careful look at the evaluation form. Given the number of repetitions of these concepts in class, we had expected a minimum score of 18 out of a maximum of 25 during this evaluation. If your child scores higher this, then he/she is absorbing the material well or already knew basic Hindi conversation from home. For some children who may have found the test trivial, we will likely test further with an slightly more advanced test in January. If your child scored lower than 18, we will request you to practice the lesson plans repeatedly at home to build the child's confidence. Our goal is to bring all children to a minimal level and encourage children who already have a hindi background to step up further. PARENT's CORNER webpage: Please visit http://gurukul-wa.org/Parents/default.aspx. It has useful info such as: Youtube links for Hindi panchatantra adn hindi tutorials Games and other resources for regular Hindi Chapter book on spoken HIndi and lesson plans you can use at home. Also, a copy of the exact set of questions asked during the evaluation. Please take a time to look at volunteering corner and volunteer in class if you have yet not done so. Dhanyawad, Yogita | | | | | | | Namaste,

During Hindi session we reviewed previous lessons on family members, body parts, numbers and colors. Rajashree, Reva’s mom conducted the Hindi session.
During the cultural session, we talked about Guru Nanak Devji. We showed the kids a Powerpoint presentation about his beliefs, Gurudwara, Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism, etc. The kids made Bhangara dancing puppets for art.
We also focused a lot on the conversational part as we are going to have the evaluation next week. We divided the kids into four stations to give more individual attention. We also rotated the kids between stations.
I would like to thank Rajashree, Sugandha, Ketan, and a couple of youth board members (Mihar and Shubam) for running the various stations.
Parents, following are the things that I would like you to review with your kids before next week so they feel comfortable. Do make it fun for them.
- They should answer your questions in complete sentences. - If we show a family picture, they should be able to identify the members and the relationship. For Ex. “Yeh kaun hai?” (Who is this?). “Yeh kinke papa hain?” (Whose father is this?). - Focus on these following verbs – baitna (to sit), likhna (to write), Bhaagna (to run), Khelna (to play), khaana (to eat), Peena (to drink). Ask questions such that they are able to use the same verb in both genders. For Eg, “Ladka kya karta hai?” and if he is playing, they should say: “Ladka kheltha hai. Same deal for a girl and they should say: ”Ladki khelthi hai”. We use only simple present tense. Do not ask questions like “Ladka kya kar raha hai?” - We will be evaluating the kids one on one with same set of questions to be consistent so that our evaluation bar is the same. - There are some resources for the test: a) There is a new "Parent's Corner web page". We have published the lesson plans as well as the chapter book for spoken Hindi as attachments on this web page: http://gurukul-wa.org/Parents/default.aspx. b) At the Gurukul website under Documents section, there is a link to Audio Books which have audio clips.
Note: A couple of kids brought snack with nuts to the class. Given that a few kids have serious nut allergies, these should be STRICTLY AVOIDED.

| | | | | | | Namaste, During cultural session we went over the Dandiya drill. Please remember, we don’t have a regular class next week. We are celebrating Gurukul Diwali Dandiya festivity at Inglemoor Junior High (Nov 08 from 2:30 pm). You must have received the evite from the Gurukul. Conversation session: We have been practicing conversation by rotating the kids between three stations. We went over family scene and action verbs. In the family scene, we point at the pictures and ask the kids to tell us who they are and how are they related. We emphasize that they answer in complete sentence. For Eg Yeh Kaun hai? (Who is this?). Most of the time the kids would answer, “papa hai”. We expect them to answer, “Yeh papa hai”. In action verbs we showed pictures of a boy and a girl doing the same action. So when we point at the picture, the child should be able to say “Ladka katha hai” or “Ladki kathi hai” (The boy/girl eats). The verbs we reviewed today were khana (to eat), Pina(to drink), Bhaitna(to sit), Bhagna(to run), khelna(to play), likna(to write),and Padna(to read). Parents whenever you get a chance ask simple questions using the above verbs. We will be evaluating their conversation understanding. Dhanyawad -meera
| | | | | | | Namaste,
This week in hindi we revised our numbers, colors & made a picture of person where kids got a chance to draw a body parts. This week we focused more on spoken hindi with action verbs. We also reviewed parivaar with them using pictures. At home please focus more on hindi sentences while doing your daily work. Hindi speaking don't have to be separate task you can ask them to answer in hindi while doing cooking, eating ... & other activities. Soon we will be evaluating kids on spoken hindi, they need to tell full sentences like looking at picture they say "ladka bhagta hai" (Boy is running) and not just "bhagta".

Conversation session: We reviewed last week’s lesson on Mera/Meri. We asked them to use “Unka/Unki” (Theirs – faraway) and “Inka/Inki” (Theirs- closeby) based on the ending sound of the objects. “Unka” and “Inka” are used when the objects end with “aa” sound. “Unki” and “Inki” are used when objects end with “ee” sound. We sit in a circle and kids converse by taking turns. For Eg: “Yeh Ajitesh hai. Yeh Inka thala hai”. This is Ajitesh. This is his lock. “ Yeh Inki /Unki Chathri hai”. This is their umbrella. We also added verbs into our conversation. The three verbs we used were “khana” (to eat), “Pina” (to drink), and “Bhagna” (to run). Conversation session: The kids learned when to use “Mera” (masculine gender for my/mine)and “Meri” (feminine gender for my/mine) . Mera is used when objects end with “aa” sound. For Eg: Yeh mera thala hai. This is my lock. Thala (masculine gender) ends with “aa”. Meri is used when objects end with “ee” sound. For Eg: Yeh meri tokri hai. This is my basket. Tokri (feminine gender) ends with “ee” sound. We didn’t talk to the kids about genders. We only focused on the ending sound. We used following words in our conversation- 1) With Mera - objects ending with “aa” sound- pyala(glass), thala(lock), thaila(bag). 2) With Meri - objects ending with “ee” sound- rassi(rope), chabi(key), tokri(basket).
