Class Review

We continued learning the ‘swars’ from the Hindi alphabet, using the link below as the main tool to teach this topic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crJaiBkCj60&feature=related
So far, we have covered  अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ए ऐ. We will cover the remaining swars ओ औ अं अ: ऋ  in the next class.
As part of this learning, the children practiced writing these swars 10 times on ruled sheets and also completed the writing exercises in the folder as homework.
We also showed them some random Hindi text and asked them to pick out the swars that they recognized. The goal of Level 1 is to have the children know the swars, able to recognize them and try to write them.

In the last class, we enacted the “waking up and going to school” scenario again to revise vocabulary about common verbs.

National bird (Peacock)
National animal (Tiger)
National flower (Lotus)
National sport (Field Hockey – yes, not cricket )
National emblem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emblem_of_India)
National flag

During the evaluation, we found that some children were not clear on the difference between a sari and a salwar-kameez or kurta. Kamlesh-ji wore a sari in the last class and helped the children understand more about the sari.

All teams were asked questions in the form of conversational sentences using vocabulary from past classes. The game ended in a tie ;-)
We also introduced new vocabulary for vegetables from the folder. The kids listened to the “Aloo Bola” poem, also in the folder and is available for download on the class website.

10/4 - Class Review
Hindi Session
We reviewed the vocabulary for body parts and family and colors. We practiced colors by asking kids to point out different colors on their dress and shoes. Children with "neela" on their dress stepped forward and showed me "yeh shirt neela hai", or "yeh neela hai", etc. We did this for all the colors we learnt.

The kids also learnt basic Hindi greetings:
"Aap kaise hain?" - "Main theek hoon." - "Dhanyavaad".
Practice this at home.

In preparation for the conversation session, the kids were introduced to "Ladkaa" and "Ladkii" and a few action verbs - "Ladkaa baithtaa hai", "Ladkii chaltii hai", "Ladkaa bhaagtaa hai". The idea here was to get the children intuitively adapted to use of genders in Hindi. The children seemed to picking up on this concept.

Spoken Hindi Session
In the spoken Hindi session, we divided the class into 4 groups based on level of Hindi knowledge like in the last class. Children in the different groups described their family picture using simple sentences like "Yeh papa hai", "Papa ka naam Gopal hai", etc. We covered the use of the action verbs during this session.

The focus of the spoken session is to get the children used to the Hindi sentence structure. It is unrealistic to expect they will remember all the action verbs in just one class. We will continue to revise a few common action  verbs in each class.

Culture Session
The children learnt about Gandhi-ji on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Nisha-ji educated the class about Gandhi-ji and told a couple of moral stories. The children made a cute Gandhi puppet as part of the hands-on activity.

We ended the class by singing the Indian National Anthem - Jana Gana Mana.

9/27 - Class Review
Hindi Session
As usual, we started off with the class prayer. The children seem to be picking up the prayer now. Please have them listen to the song at home. We reviewed the vocabulary for body parts and family. We practiced “Sar kandhe ghutnay paanv” again a few times. We introduced new vocabulary for common colors – please have the children review this at home.

Spoken Hindi Session
In the spoken Hindi session, we divided the class into 4 groups based on level of Hindi knowledge. We will try to stick with these groups in the future classes, making minor adjustments as needed. The concepts of “Yeh/Vah” and “Inka/Unka” were introduced in the spoken session. The different groups practiced putting these in sentences and continued practicing previously introduced constructs – “Mera naam”, “Aapka naam”, “Inka naam”, “Unka naam”, “Ye kya hai”, “Ye … hai”.

Culture Session
The children learnt about two festivals – Raksha Bandhan and Dussehra. Nisha-ji demonstrated Raksha Bandhan by having Mira tie a Raakhi to her brother Vikram. The children then learnt about Dussehr and heard a story about Ram, Laxman, Sita and Ravana. They made a puppet of Ravana as part of the activity.

We ended the class by singing the Indian National Anthem - Jana Gana Mana.

9/20 - Class Review
Hindi Session
We started the class by practising the class prayer a few times- Tum Hi Ho Mata. Nisha-ji also explained what the prayer is about. The children have started to become familiar with the first four lines. We reviewed the vocabulary for Parivaar. We covered the vocabulary for body parts in the class folder. The children learnt a new poem "Sar kandhe ghutne paanv" that we practised many times and got some good exercise doing that!

Spoken Hindi Session
During the spoken Hindi session, we had the children learn to ask and reply to the question "Ye kya hai?". Each pair of children was given flashcards and they took turns asking each other "Ye kya hai?" and replying in the form "Ye ... hai". The focus here was to get the sentence construct correct, not necessarily knowing the exact Hindi word for the object. So it was ok to say "Ye ball hai". The kids also learnt about negatives - e.g. "Ye ball nahin hai, ye bat hai".

Then we had the children ask us (the grown ups) our names using "Aapka naam kya hai?". Here also they learnt using "nahin". For example, they asked me "Aapka naam kya hai?". I replied "Mera naam Rahul hai". The kids immediately said "Nahin, aapka naam Joydeep hai".

Finally we divided the class into three smaller groups and practised saying someone else's name e.g. "Mere papa ka naam ... hai, meri mummy ka naam ... hai, mere school ka naam ... hai".

Culture Session
We reviewed the map of India again where the children told us which state they are from in India. The children learnt about Ganesh Chaturthi. Nisha-ji had the class in rapt attention with the story about Ganesha and how he got his elephant head. She also showed the children how Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in India - complete with getting the Ganesha idol chanting "Ganapati Bappa Morya", doing an aarti, getting prasad and immersing the idol in water.

Next, the kids learnt about the month of Ramadan and the Eid festival. As part of these festivities, the children made a nice paper lantern by coloring and gluing together the paperwork.

We ended the class by singing the Indian National Anthem - Jana Gana Mana.

9/13 - Class Review

We started off teaching the children how to do Namaste (standing, hands folded, head slightly bowed). The children then started learning how to say their name in Hindi - "Mera naam … hai".

We learnt about family:
Ghar - Home
Parivaar - Family
Maa - Mother
Paapaa - Father
Bhai - Brother
Bahan - Sister
Dadaji / Nanaji - Grandfather
Dadiji / Naniji - Grandmother

The two main action words that we covered today were:
Khade ho jao (stand up)
Baith jao / Baitho (sit down)
Zor se bolo(loudly)
Dheere se bolo(softly)

We also had the children recite the first four lines of the class prayer - Tum Hi Ho Mata. This song will be available on the class website so you can listen to it.

During the spoken Hindi session, we performed a chain drill where each child said 'Namaste, mera naam ... hai' to the other. The two main sentences the children heard today are:
1. Mera naam ... hai.
2. Ye ... hai. E.g. Ye maa hain, ye papa hain, ye chair hai, ye table hai.
Please practice these sentences with your children at home. We will continue to do more in the spoken Hindi sessions in the subsequent classes.

In the culture session, the children learnt about India, its map, its surroundings (seas, neighbours) and its different names - India, Bharat, Hindustan. Nisha-ji told them a short story about how this name came to be - about King Dushyant, Shakuntala and their son, Bharath. We also learnt from the children where they have been in India and how they have to change two planes to reach India!
